Who else was crazy about Sailor Moon growing up? I am still crazy about her! This show was my first real introduction into anime and my love of shouju was born. I have been following the reboot news and am so excited that it is airing. I remember watching an hour of Sailor Moon everyday growing up and I made sure that I studied more that Usagi! I have watched all of the original series multiple times and often if I am unwell I put on an episode or two and rest up while watching it. I think that it brings me back to a time that makes me feel really comfortable and homey. I am not going to give you a play by play of each episode but I am going to talk about what I really enjoy about the reboot.
So for starters you may be thinking what is an anime reboot? This means that a studio (in this case Toei Animation) takes an older anime and reanimates it and tries to do something a little different. The Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal reboot has two places to draw inspiration from – the animated series and the manga. The studio said out of the gate that they were going to follow the manga storyline more closely during the reboot which I am super excited about. This means there should be less filler and it will be different enough for people to get into it and have it stand on it’s own. Here is the plot synopsis from the Official Website:
Usagi is a little clumsy and a crybaby, but she’s also one spirited eigth grader. One day she meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent mark on her forehead, and transforms into the pretty sailor-suited guardian of love and justice, Sailor Moon! As a chosen guardian of justice, Usagi apparently has a mission to protect a princess, and to find her fellow Guardians and the Legendary Silver Crystal. Meanwhile, Queen Beryl of the Dark Kingdom sends her subordinates to the town where Usagi lives. They cause strange events to occur there, all in an effort to acquire the tremendously powerful Silver Crystal…
Can Sailor Moon and the other Guardians successfully find the Legendary Silver Crystal, and protect the princess…!?
Drawing from the manga for more inspiration they have changed the art style to be less cartoony and much more manga-esque. I am super into the new look. I mean those Sailor Scouts up there look gorgeous. There is a lot of computer animation and I love the updated look. The transformation scenes are very pretty and a different flavor than the old ones which I think I will get use to!
I am really excited about watching more of the series as so far only the first three episodes have aired and I am pretty grabby hands for more. If you live in the US you can watch them for free here on CrunchyRoll. Side note: I really start to sing out “Saaailor MOON” before I watch it much to my boyfriend’s chagrin however it makes me so happy I think he deals with it.
I will leave you will this picture of sassy Luna from the reboot – LOVE. [icon type=”heart”]
