General game play
Wakfu is a tactical turn based RPG in MMO form. So it’s pretty awesome. It’s based on the same world as Dofus [a crazy French MMO, really] only 1000 years in the future. The old world has essentially been demolished and you are trying to start anew. Unlike most MMO’s your actions in Wakfu are not only against mobs, NPCs, other player but the environment. You can decided to cut down someone’s grain and use it to bake bread. Every enemy you kill will need to get reseeded in the area at some point otherwise the mobs seriously go away. Wakfu is a great different MMO in beta currently. If you like Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea then you’ll really love the game play. Wakfu is a really rich MMO with a lot of depth and since it’s in closed beta [in the US!] it’s just going to get better!
Now unlike other MMO’s Wakfu’s leveling system isn’t about quests and grinding it out. It’s about being able to craft better weapons and gain money through trade. The only way to get money in Wafku is it make it and you have to be a miner! So the game relies heavily on trading. Some people think crafting is terrible, but really in Wakfu it’s not at all. There are so many professions to choose from that you’ll be able to find something you enjoy doing. I am not a mining fan in any game, but I do love farming and I think trapping is tops since no one apparently loots their kills. It’s good stuff. The things I get from trapping I can make into things or sell in the marketplace.
Skills and Spells
So how do you progress with your character? Well wiki has put it best so far:
Each class has 25 spells: 3 elementary categories of 5 spells each, which change according to the class (fire, air, water or ground) and 10 support spells related to the class that doesn’t damage the opponent, such as moving spells or boosts. Each elementary spell will profit from one hundred levels of power. These spells will progress to the wire of their use by the players. Contrary to typical RPGs the character will be able to use all the spells available almost as of the beginning. In fact, all of the spells are available when you are level 10. The support spells each have a level from 0 to 4. Their level can be increased by using the point earned when you level up. These same points can also be used to increase other characteristics, so the player needs to use them carefully.
Now it’s totally still in beta. It’s closed beta in the States and it’s open beta in Europe. So naturally there is a lot of terrible going on with the greatness. Memory leaks, confusion, and lots of forum hunting are there, but it’s really only getting better. Today they actually released two more playable classes a time mage called Xelor’s and a berserker class called Sacrier. There are going to be at least 13 play able classes total. The ecosystem is amazing, the factions and general political system are great [electing players as governors?!] and it’s a really pretty game. Grouping up is fun and highly encouraged, but if you want to do your own thing that’s more than welcome too. All in all Wakfu is off to a great start. As the game progresses I’ll post some progress posts and really show you around the game play – it’s bananas!
Have you ever played Wakfu? Did you play Dofus? What MMO’s are you into right now?
