General game play
Minecraft is one of those games where you’re like “How is this fun?!” Then you start to play and things start to click and you can’t stop playing. If you really breakdown Minecraft to it’s core it is fancy legos + enemies that can kill you and/or blowup the sweet stuff you’re trying to build. For a more about the basic game play here is a real general wikitastic answer and then head to the forums [where lots of magic happens for Minecraft users].
Skins & texture packs
I love the skins and texture packs portion of the game. It’s totally not necessary for the game play, but it makes it SUPER awesome. You’ll find packs of all sorts and you’ll see you tend to gravitate towards the looks of certain packs. I’m in love with Jolicraft at the moment. I also love Linecraft – probably more than a person really should [I hope it gets updated soon to include all the new stuff they’ve been adding!]. They are both beautiful texture packs and both very different. Oh the skins for your character – I have a real love/hate relationship with the skins so far produced. Some are super amazing and there is a wide variety – for men. There are very very few skins for women and even less of those skins involve pants. I wear pants in the real world and I’d enjoy it if I could also wear them in a videogame once in a while. I am currently Using a skin by topazamaranth found here. As you can see high quality few pants, but a skirt. I’m rocking golden armor at the moment so other people at least see me with some form of pants. I hope that in the future there can be girls with pants on Minecraft servers.
Single player vs server
I’m sure there are many many merits of playing solo on single player. I think that Minecraft is amazing to play on a server. The single player can be great for trying ideas out, but really I want to show people what awesome thing that I am making. Maybe they have some ideas for me! The collaboration aspect of Minecraft is so much fun! The server I am on is full of friends [and maybe family soon] who are willing to help out make whatever I am making [Lava Piller? Deck? Boat? Whatever it is right then]. Also going through the buildings or castles or towns or what have you that others have build is not only fun, but it’s inspiring and even social.
- “Hey Tom you have a sweet throne room! Are you going to build it out more?”
- “How did you make those sofas? Lanterns? Fountains? I want something like that!”
- “Holy crap your whole house is automated! Your red stone knowledge is amazing! Can you help me with a light switch at some point and time?”
Seeing others Minecraft skills and having them teach you is so valuable since Minecraft has a learning curve/adjustment period.
Now this game isn’t all compass jumping, digging, and praying for more iron it does have some limitations. I feel the main limitation is that you’re dropped off into the middle of a world seemingly always near night time and then it’s night and BAM you’re dead. You saw maybe a skeleton but you think WTH. So you try again you’re like ok I’ll LIVE this time – BAM Spider attack. This game very much lacks a tutorial. Now I know people are going to be like “Hi, welcome to the internet – LAND OF TUTORIALS” but if you don’t know to go find trees or make a mini base the game seems like a huge waste. Being so unsure when starting shouldn’t keep people from the fun and the game play. I think honestly the best thing to do is start with someone who is already playing. Be like HEY I keep dying help me out! They will know all to well about starting Minecraft up for the first time and how confusing it can be.
Do you play Minecraft? What are your favorite skins? Texture Packs? How do you play?
